General Liability Insurance
Every school needs General Liability insurance. This essential coverage protects you if you are sued by someone who claims you caused their physical injury or damaged their property.
It’s a fact of life—accidents will happen, and you might be sued. It can occur in an instant: a parent claims your negligence caused a child’s injury, or someone slips on your floor. In any of these circumstances, you may be held responsible.
With Markel’s General Liability insurance, you have the advantage. If you’re sued, Markel will pay the costs associated with defending you, even if the allegations are false, frivolous, or groundless. We’ll also pay the costs to settle a claim, or costs that result if you lose the case. Win or lose, Markel will handle your claim promptly, fairly, and courteously.
We offer limits up to $1 million per occurrence/$3 million aggregate. Per occurrence is the maximum amount Markel will pay for each covered claim. Aggregate is the maximum amount Markel will pay for all covered claims combined.
Umbrella Liability Insurance
When your general liability, auto liability, and employer’s liability limits are exhausted, umbrella liability gives higher limits to protect against catastrophic lawsuits. We offer limits up to $10 million.
Management Value Protection
Directors' & Officers' Liability
Employment Practices Liability
Fiduciary Liability

Other Liability Coverages
Educators’ Liability: Protects your school’s board of directors if they are sued for decisions they’ve made, alleged misstatements, or unfair educational practices. Also defends if your school is sued for the wrongful acts, errors, or omissions of employees, volunteers, and others that arise from job-related duties.
Employee Benefits Liability: If you administer an employee benefits plan for your staff, this coverage is essential. It covers claims resulting from negligent acts or omissions in enrollment, such as mistakes in coverage or inadvertently omitting an eligible employee from coverage.
Corporal Punishment Liability: Defends you against allegations of corporal punishment to your students, even when groundless, false, or frivolous. Many insurance policies don’t offer this much-needed coverage.
Sexual Abuse and Molestation Liability: Offers critical coverage for situations that can be explosive. Our claims staff has expertise in handling these types of claims and is sensitive to the needs of all parties involved.
Sports Liability: We cover many interscholastic and intramural sports, including archery, baseball, basketball, equestrian, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. Certain restrictions apply to some sports.
Teachers’ Professional Liability: Allows teachers to perform their professional duties without fear of devastating lawsuits, defense costs, and judgments. Without it, you could end up footing the bill alone.
Special Events Liability: Protects you from liability during field trips, fund-raisers, and other special events. And we don’t make you buy a separate policy for most special activities.
Volunteers as Insureds: When your school uses volunteers, they’re acting on your behalf. This insurance defends their unintentional negligent acts as it defends those of your employees.
Child Abduction: Will provide payment for reasonable and necessary covered expenses as a result of an abduction.
Extension Endorsements: Bundled options for broader liability protection.
Property Insurance
If you own the building that houses your school, you need property insurance to protect both your building and its contents. If you rent, you need property insurance to cover your valuable equipment. Markel’s coverage is available on a special cause of loss basis, which means you’re covered for events like fire, windstorms, burglaries, vandalism, and even frozen pipes.
Systems Breakdown: Protects you when any mechanical, electrical, or pressure system breaks down. This includes heating and air conditioning systems, computers, boilers, refrigerators, hot water heaters, and telephone systems.
Crime: Covers you if an employee steals money, securities, or other property.
Key Employee Replacement: Adds coverage for specified expenses incurred due to a sudden occurrence which results in the death or permanent disability of the Key Employee.
Communicable Disease and Food Contamination: Additional coverage that can be included when Business Income is purchased.
Commercial Property Plus Extension: Additional limits and extensions for coverages such as Accounts Receivable, Employee Dishonesty, Ordinance or Law, and Utility Services.
Accident & Health Insurance
To protect your school’s property, staff, and students, choose an insurance partner that gives your school a real advantage. Markel offers complete coverage, expert risk-management resources, and professional, caring claims handling.
K-12 Student Accident Insurance: Covers students’ medical bills if they are injured at school or during sponsored activities.
Catastrophic Accident Medical Insurance: Adds a second layer of protection for catastrophic injuries, such as paralysis or coma.
Tuition Refund: Protects private schools and colleges from the financial consequences of students’ forced or voluntarily withdrawal from school prior to the end of the term.
Markel Basic Health: For schools with hourly, part-time, seasonal, or temporary workers who do not offer major medical insurance.
Automobile Insurance
Markel’s automobile insurance provides complete liability and physical damage coverage for the owned, leased, non-owned, and hired automobiles (such as vans, pickups, and buses) used at your school. Limits up to $1 million available. An extension endorsement is available for broader auto protection.
